Japanese Etiquette for Travellers

Online (Zoom) Event

NEXT DATE TBA

Whether you have plans to visit Japan or are just interested in Japanese culture, join Japanese tutor Elly Darrah at this popular event to find out about:

  • The dos and don'ts of public transport
  • How to visit a shrine or temple
  • How to behave at onsen (hot springs) or sentō (public baths)

The event will follow a relaxed format with plenty of chances to ask questions, and at the end, there will be an interactive quiz for you to test your knowledge!

This event requires no knowledge of Japanese to take part - all are welcome.

Note: if you are unsure of when this event will take place in your time zone, please use this online convertor to check.

FAQs

This event will be hosted on Zoom. Meeting details and joining instructions will be shared in advance via email.

While generally I encourage participants to keep their camera on, I understand that this may not be accessible for some people for a variety of reasons.

If having your camera off makes it easier for you to take part for whatever reason, you can join via voice call or chat function only.

You are absolutely welcome to come along for free. However, please consider donating towards running costs if possible.

At the moment, no, but it may do in future! Sign up to the monthly Ippo Ippo Japanese newsletter for updates (and lots more).

As this is an online event, I hope that in general it is more accessible than one held in person.

To improve online accessibility, I do the following:

  • Enable automated (English) captions on Zoom
  • Encourage participation either verbally or through other forms, e.g. in the chat
  • Allow participants to have their cameras off if preferred
  • Share my pronouns and encourage students to share theirs too (if comfortable doing so - this is never mandatory)
  • Always give the option for support needs/accessibility info to be shared at signup

I am trying to improve the accessibility of events, but am very aware there will be things I have missed. If you have any specific accessibility or support needs that you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Absolutely! You can join from wherever you are in the world. Just be sure to check how your time zone lines up with lesson times.

Remember: the UK has both British Summer Time (BST) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) depending on the time of year.
