I can’t quite believe it’s nearly August! Did you know next Thursday is かき氷の日 (kakigōri no hi - kakigōri day)? Read all about it (and more!) in my blog post: 3 Fun Facts About July in Japan.
If you follow Ippo Ippo on social media, you’ll already be aware that I have some quite sad - or at the very least bittersweet - news to share, which is that this summer marks the end of my time as a Japanese teacher.
That’s right: I am no longer teaching.
I’ve been struggling to put all of the factors that led to this decision into words on a page, so I hope you’ll forgive me for linking you to a slightly slapdash video I made explaining things.
While in the video I explain some of the personal factors that went into this decision, in all honesty, another big reason for me deciding to change change careers is that I never really managed to make teaching a sustainable source of income for myself.
That’s not to say it was all bad - far from it! I’ve felt so lucky to have met all the wonderful people I’ve taught, collaborated with and hosted at events over the last 4-5 years, and I will genuinely miss so many of those interactions and relationships. It’s been a huge privilege to get to spend so much time immersed in a subject I care so much about, and I’m grateful for how much teaching has opened my eyes to the importance of safe, supportive and *fun* learning environments - something I didn’t fully appreciate previously as a learner.
If you happen to be an aspiring Japanese teacher, I’m more than happy to talk about the things I’ve learnt over the last 4-5 years of attempting this line of work, so please don’t hesitate to reach out about this.
And on that note, I want to make it clear that Ippo Ippo is still here for now!
While I may have stopped teaching, there are still events happening this summer. What’s more, as I sift through all the many resources I’ve accumulated over the years, I’m exploring the idea of sharing some of these on my website (for free). Some of this might simply be lists of useful websites or YouTube channels, but there may be room for some other ideas… Watch this space!
Anyway, I seem to have managed to write rather a lot, so thank to you to anyone who has read this far! I hope to be back in August with another Ippo Ippo update.
