Tadoku Tasters

Online (Zoom) | Any Level

**Event ended May 2022**

Do you want to spend more time studying Japanese, but find that plugging away at the same old learning materials is getting old or stressing you out? If so, tadoku may be one way to refresh your approach!

Through tadoku (多読 - extensive reading), we will explore a new way of reading, introducing techniques that help you to relax into and enjoy learning Japanese.

Tadoku is an increasingly popular method of learning Japanese, and is a lot of fun! Recently, I've been using Japanese in many of my one-on-one lessons, and the feedback has been great. Our lessons are more lighthearted, and I can really see the difference in my students.

If you're tired of traditional learning methods - or simply hammering away at the same textbook or app every day - I can recommend giving tadoku a go. After all, we learn the most when we're having a good time!

Holly

The Tadoku Taster was an enjoyable introduction to a new tool for improving my Japanese. It's hard to find Japanese reading material at beginner's level so this was a pleasant surprise. Elly and Hitomi san are positive and encouraging.

Jack

The Tadoku Taster was a great way to learn about Tadoku. It made me realise that I could start using the limited Japanese knowledge I have already by reading short stories. I can't wait to go through more books!

Sara

I really enjoyed the Tadoku Taster! The class was really fun and interactive, I felt really comfortable even as a beginner. After the Taster I now have a good idea of what Tadoku is as a tool to learn Japanese and Elly and Hitomi shared a lot of interesting Tadoku materials to read too!

Who Can Take Part?

Level:

  • These sessions are open to all levels from beginner to advanced, but we ask that you are at least mostly comfortable with hiragana (you can bring along a cheat sheet if you like!)
  • You do not need to know katakana or kanji to take part in tadoku
  • During the sessions, we will help match you with materials that suit your level, from beginner to advanced

Age:

  • These sessions are aimed at adults (18+)
  • Under 18s can take part if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What Can I Expect?

The Tadoku Taster events are a collaboration between Ippo Ippo Japanese's Elly Darrah and Japanese teacher Hitomi Kobayashi, author of several Japanese language textbooks.

The first event (Thurs. 7th April) will be hosted by Hitomi, while Elly will host the second on Tues. 19th April.

During both events, we will:

  • Introduce tadoku as a reading and learning method
  • Discuss the Golden Rules of Tadoku
  • Enjoy reading both as a group and individually
  • Share our thoughts and discoveries with one another
  • Provide information about where to find more tadoku resources*

*This information and more will be shared in the free handout emailed to you following the event.

As the aim of the event is to have fun while reading, you can expect a low pressure environment that you can enjoy at your own pace. During the individual reading section, participants will be given separate breakout rooms, to which Hitomi or Elly will drop in to help you with any questions.

At the end of each session there will time for Q&A. Feel free to ask about tadoku or anything else related to learning Japanese.

Please note:

  • Tadoku Tasters will run with a minimum of 4 and maximum of 12 participants.
  • The content of the two events will be the same.
